Tile-based sample mangler

Typo

Cut a sample into tiles, then play the grid. Readers (moving playheads) walk the tiles and play what they touch, and moves like scatter, mirror and chop reshape the grid as you go.

Typo on screen: a grid of purple, red, orange and pink tiles on cream and black grounds, with a circle and a curved wedge outlining the tiles two readers are playing.

What it does

A grid you can play and wear down

01

Read a tile at a glance

A tile's shape shows how loud its slice is, its colour how bright, and the way it faces how it plays.

How to read a tile, in three rows. Shape runs from a small dot through a bar, a quarter circle and a triangle to a full square, from a quiet slice to a loud one. Colour runs through purple, red, orange and pink, from a dull slice to a bright one. Facing is one triangle turned a quarter at a time, which changes how the slice plays.shapequiet to loudcolourdull to brightfacinghow it playsturning a tile changes its speed and pitch

Readers play the grid

Up to eight readers walk the tiles and play what they touch. Each has its own pattern, speed and level.

A grid of tiles with three readers playing it. A grid reader walks a path along the top row, lighting each tile in red. A shape reader is a dashed circle that plays the five tiles inside it, in purple. A pick reader jumps between four tiles picked from anywhere, in orange. Moves keep it changing

Scatter, sort, mirror and chop rearrange the grid in one tap. Teleport, rot and spread keep running while it plays.

Two four-by-four grids of coloured tiles with an arrow marked scatter between them. Before, each row is one colour; after, the same sixteen tiles are mixed up. A dotted reader path along the second row is the same in both, so it now plays different slices.scatterbeforeaftersame reader path, new slices under it

Bring your own sound

Load up to four files. For a long one, choose the part you want and see how it will be cut into tiles.

The chooser: a strip showing a whole file with the chosen part marked, and a close-up cut into tiles.
