Generative layering looper

Multiverse

Put one sound in the portal and tap to add layers, each one replaying the one before it, a little more broken up every time.

Multiverse on screen: a black portal circled by coloured rings, one for each layer, in a field of stars, with the warp controls open on the left.

What it does

A loop that keeps growing

01

Layers that grow from one sound

Each tap on the portal adds a ring. Every layer plays back the one before it, so the loop drifts further from where it began, up to eight layers deep.

A black portal with four coloured rings round it, one for each layer. The ring nearest the portal is the origin, the sound you started with. Layer I, II and III follow outwards, and each ring replays the one inside it. Up to eight layers can grow.originlayer Ilayer IIlayer IIIeach ring replaysthe one inside itup to eight layers, round one portal

Rules the layers share

Set time, pitch, grain, colour and shuffle once. The effect builds with every layer, and the same universe always gives the same result.

Four bars of the same length stacked one under another: the origin, then layers I, II and III. The first half of each bar is bright. Dashed lines stretch that first half across the whole of the next bar, which is broken into finer and finer grains. With time at one half, each layer zooms into the first half of the one before, and every layer stays the same length.originlayer Ilayer IIlayer IIItime at ½each zooms into the first half of the one before

You choose where to listen

Drag across the rings, or pick a profile on the lens tab, to hear one layer, a few together, or the whole stack.

Three rows of eight circles, one circle for each layer. In the first row one circle is lit: you hear one layer. In the second, three neighbouring circles are lit: a few layers together. In the third all eight are lit: the whole stack. All the layers play at once; where you listen decides which ones you hear.the focus picks what you hearone layera few togetherthe whole stackdrag across the rings to move it
